First National Sports Games in Cuba
Opening ceremony, at night and in the rain, of the First National SportsGames in Cuba. A runner carrying the Olympic flame enters the stadium while hundreds of flag bearers form an impressive ballet. Delegations from several regions parade, as well as horsemen and horsewomen. A choreography performed by gymnasts, young girls and boys from Cuba follows. Fidel CASTRO on the podium congratulates the organizers, instructors and competitors of these games. He makes reference to the rain falling on Cuba, an allusion illustrated by images of peasants working in
the fields. He lists the successes achieved by Cuban athletes at the Pre-Olympic Games in Mexico (Descent from a plane of medal-winning athletes). Fidel CASTRO announces the creation of a newspaper for
youth that will be called "Juvendud rebelde" (rotary presses running, printing and reception of the first issue by the newspaper team together). He affirms the essential role of youth in
the path to communism. An athlete lights the Olympic flame after climbing steps flanked by young girls dressed in Greek tunics.
