TOM TOM CLUB - GENIUS OF LOVE (1981) Talking Heads affiliated 80s New Wave group Tom Tom Club found themselves in the mix with Hip Hop's pioneers when the band, founded by husband and wife duo Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, released their 1981 single 'Genius of Love'. The song was quick to be adopted by the artists of the then still emerging Hip Hop scene as a popular sample source: the track was sampled and replayed 6 times in 1981 alone by artists including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and Dr Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde (a group founded by the late rapper turned record exec. and former Motown CEO Andre Harrell). The song has continued to be a popular sample source through to this day, with some of the best known uses including Mariah Carey's 1995 smash hit 'Fantasy' and Latto's 2021 breakthrough single 'Big Energy'.
