Part 4 of 7 of the 1979 thriller. Smiley and Peter Guillam realise that Ricky Tarr has not told them the full story after discovering that his presence in Britain is known to those suspected of being the mole. Guillam also finds himself under suspicion, but as Smiley assesses his knowledge of the four main suspects, he also reflects on an encounter he once had with Karla, Moscow Centre's leading strategist...
Starring Alec Guinness, Michael Jayston, Anthony Bate, Michael Aldridge, Terence Rigby, Ian Richardson, Bernard Hepton, Hywel Bennett, Patrick Stewart, Warren Clarke, George Sewell, Beryl Reid, Alec Sabin, Marjorie Hogan and Joe Prami. Halfway through and this thriller continues to be a slow burning mystery that remains utterly compelling, not least for it's shifty suspects and memorable theme tune. Michael Jayston revealed in a BBC interview he did just months before he died that he had actually been chosen by Alec Guinness himself for the part of Peter Guillam, as casting directors had asked him who he would trust working alongside him. That's some recommendation! It's also interesting to see yet more Before They Were Famous faces in Warren Clarke (as a camp secretary) and Patrick Stewart, years before his turn in Star Trek as the sinister Karla.
