Part 6 of 7 of the wartime period drama. Percy is found guilty and is sentenced to hang. Henry Knockall decides to go door knocking to raise a petition against the sentence and ropes Mr Josser into helping him, but the later march in the street proves fatal for someone. Percy finds himself haunted by nightmares of Edith Watson, while Mrs Josser is distraught when son Ted is called up into the army. But Doris' offer to move in with Ted's wife Cynthia while he is away ends up angering her mother, as does her announcement that she and Bill are not to have a church wedding. Meanwhile Mr Squales continues to pursue his wealthy benefactor Mrs Jan Byl in seances, but Mrs Vizzard is becoming increasingly suspicious of his activities...
Starring Derek Farr, Julia McCarthy, Madge Ryan, Peter Jeffrey, Fiona Gray, Trevor Eve, William Morgan Sheppard, Terence Budd, Betty Alberge, Patricia Hayes, John Sharp, Steven Barnes, Tina Martin, Brian Oulton, Peggy Ann Wood, Leonard Trolley, Michael McKevitt, Paul Dawkins, George Waring and Fiona Mathieson. Part 6 and the residents of 10 Dulcimer Street are campaigning for the overturning of the sentence on Percy Boon. Like with the film, I find it hard to sympathize with Percy or understand the residents efforts to challenge the sentence, unless it's down to sympathy for his poor mother. As such this episode grates a little, and it does well when it diverts it's efforts to other characters. It does shock though with a unexpected death, while there is still enjoyment wondering when conman clairvoyant Henry Squales is going to be found out. By the way, if anyone feels they may of seen the actress playing the nurse in the hospital, it is Fiona Mathieson, whose most notable role on TV was in the Agatha Christie Hour episode "The Fourth Man" from 1982. She is better remembered to listeners of The Archers in the 1980's as Clarrie Grundy, but is another of those screen stars who died far too young, committing suicide in a hotel in January 1987 due to postnatal depression at the tragically young age of 36.
